What is the difference between the NBV and the NBV21?

THE SHORT ANSWER

The NBV21 is the revised version of the New Bible Translation from 2004. The translators have re-examined the text and adjusted wording. You don't have to get rid of a familiar NIV: first compare whether the changes help your way of reading.

A revision within the same translation family

During a revision, a translation team builds on an existing translation. That is different from a different cover or a new edition with the same interior. The NBV21 was published in 2021. The NBG describes, among other things, attention to coherence and recurring words. Capital letters are also noticeable for personal pronouns that refer to God.

The year on the front therefore tells something about the translation. The release date of an individual issue may be later. A recently printed NBV is therefore not automatically an NBV21.

Compare a known and an unknown part

First open a passage you know well. Read them in both versions and note which words are different. Then read a section that is less familiar to you. This way you not only assess recognition, but also whether you can follow the connection.

If there is a difference, look at the entire paragraph. A loosely changed term tells little about the reason for a translation choice. For an explanation you can consult the NBG explanatory notes. If you mainly want to understand differences with the HSV, use our separate advice about NBV21 and HSV.

When does a new release make sense?

Switching can be practical if your reading group or municipality uses the NBV21. You will then find the same formulations when discussing a text. Anyone who enjoys reading an NBV at home can also compare digitally without immediately purchasing a second book.

If you choose a new Bible, also assess the size, paper and explanation. The NBV21 Standaardeditie focuses on the continuous text; a youth or study Bible adds other material. Our choice: first determine why you want to replace, and then look for the version that solves that problem.
