Language and translation

Which Bible is easy to read? Look for these five characteristics

THE SHORT ANSWER

The Plain Language Bible is a good translation to try if you are looking for plain language. The BGT uses well-known words and clear sentences. Whether a Bible is pleasant to read also depends on your experience and the design of the edition.

Easy words are just the beginning

A text is not only pleasant to read because the words are short. It must also be clear who is speaking, to whom “he” refers and how the sentences are related. The NBG describes comprehensibility as the starting point of the BGT. The BGT is a translation of Biblical source texts, not a collection of retold children's stories.

Those who are already familiar with older Bible language may find it easier to read along with familiar formulations. “Easy” is therefore not a ranking that is the same for everyone.

A little reading test before you buy

Choose the same short passage in two translations. First read without explanation and assess these five points:

  • Do I understand the words used without having to look something up every time?
  • Can I repeat a sentence after reading it once?
  • Is it clear who says or does something?
  • Do subheadings and paragraphs help me follow the story?
  • Can I comfortably distinguish the printed letters?

Make a note of where you get stuck. That makes your choice more concrete than just relying on someone else's recommendation. Also try reading aloud if you want to use the Bible with others.

Choose translation, explanation and font size separately

An understandable translation can be difficult to read when the book is printed very small. Conversely, large letters do not simplify complex sentences. Therefore, check both the text and a sample page of the precise edition.

Additional explanation helps with background information, but is a different facility than simple language. View the BGT in our selection, compare other translations and if you need larger text, read it advice on large print.
