Start reading

How do you start reading the Bible without prior knowledge?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Start with a short passage from a Gospel, such as Mark. Read slowly, write down one question and continue next time. You don't have to know all the books of the Bible first or read the Bible from cover to cover.

Where is the best place to start?

The Bible contains different types of texts. A story requires a different way of reading than poetry or a letter. If you want to get acquainted with Jesus and his actions, Mark is a useful starting point. The NKJV also mentions a gospel as a starting point. That is an option, not a mandatory reading order.

For now, choose one book of the Bible. This way you don't have to decide every day where to start. If you are especially curious about the stories about the origins of the world and Israel, you can also explore Genesis. Expect a different context than in a gospel.

An achievable reading moment in four steps

  1. Choose a small section. For example, read to the next subheading, instead of a fixed number of pages.
  2. See what happens. Who speaks, to whom and in what situation?
  3. Write down one question. An unknown word or a surprising reaction is enough.
  4. Mark where you stop. Pick up the thread next time; Skipping a day doesn't mean you have to start over.

This is our practical starting proposal. Make it shorter or longer if that is more comfortable. A sustained small amount of reading is more useful than a schedule that you have to keep catching up on.

What do you do if you don't understand something?

First read the paragraph before and after. Then, if necessary, compare the same passage in another translation. An introduction can explain to whom a text is addressed. You don't have to solve difficult questions immediately: discuss them with someone who leaves room for your own questions.

Frequently asked questions

Should I start at Genesis?

No. You can start with Genesis, but a gospel is also a logical starting point if you want to read more about Jesus.

How much should I read per day?

There is no mandatory number. Choose a section that you can read quietly and remember.
