Choosing Bibles

Which Bible suits an adult with an intellectual disability?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Choose together with the reader based on language understanding, interest and need for support. The Philadelphia Bible offers short retold stories; the BGT provides a full translation into plain language.

Start with the person

An intellectual disability does not say exactly what someone can read or understand. Ask what stories someone knows and how they prefer to listen or read. Use a mature tone. A children's Bible can sometimes be nice, but it does not have to be the default choice for an adult reader.

Selection or complete Bible

Hopeful Stories for You contains 77 stories, with short sentences and illustrations from Philadelphia studios. This makes short reading moments possible. The BGT has a different purpose: to make the complete Bible text available in plain language. A collection of stories therefore does not replace all passages that someone may encounter in a service or discussion group.

Try one reading moment

Read a short story without haste. Ask an open-ended question about what stood out to the reader and allow time to respond. Images can support the conversation, but don't test as if it were a school assignment. Then choose together whether this edition invites you to read it again. Caregivers and supervisors can help without taking over the choice.

Issues to view

Choose based on your own reading purpose and, if in doubt, first look at the interior. These editions match the options above:
