Children and young people

When do you switch from a children's Bible to a complete Bible?

THE SHORT ANSWER

There is no set age at which a child must switch. See if your child can follow longer parts, asks questions himself and also wants to read stories outside of familiar stories. You can safely continue to use a children's Bible and a complete Bible side by side.

Look at interest and reading experience

A child may like to ask complicated questions and still have difficulty reading independently. Conversely, fluent technical reading does not mean that the background of a text is automatically clear. Therefore, do not make the switch a test that your child has to pass.

Try a short passage from a full translation together. Let your child tell you what happened and which words raise questions. The goal is to discover which help is useful, not to check whether every detail has been remembered.

A quiet transition in three moments

  1. Start with a familiar story. Read the retelling and then look up the same story in the entire Bible.
  2. Discuss one difference. What is more detailed? What question arises? Differences do not need to be fully explained immediately.
  3. Let your child choose what comes next. The same story again, a connecting section or something completely different.

This is our proposal for a transition without haste. Continue reading aloud if reading independently requires a lot of effort. Listening together also counts as getting to know the Bible.

What publication can help?

The Reading Together Bible (2025) combines the complete BGT with material for children and reading together. This is a possible intermediate step when a regular text Bible provides little guidance. The Together Reading Bible Junior works with a selection and is therefore a different type of publication.

Check target group, content and sample pages for each edition. View the Reading Bible together or compare first a translation and a retelling. For older readers we offer youth advice a next step.

Frequently asked questions

Should the children's Bible go?

No. A familiar children's Bible can remain useful and loved alongside a complete Bible.

Can I read an entire Bible to a child?

Yes, choose suitable parts, read yourself in advance and leave room for questions. Not every section suits every reading moment.
