How do you find a Bible text if you don't know where it was found?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Search for a few striking words in the translation in which you know the text. If you don't find anything, try a shorter phrase or a different translation. Always check the surrounding paragraph for a result: a well-known statement is not automatically a literal Bible quote.

Start with the words you know for sure

First write down which part you actually remember and which part you may have added yourself. It is better to search for two characteristic words than for a long sentence that is not exactly correct. The HSV Foundation offers a searchable Bible text; other Bible platforms also have search options.

If you get a lot of results, add an extra word. If you don't get anything, just leave out a word. A name, place, or unusual noun is often a more useful clue than words that appear almost everywhere.

Please allow for translation and recall

The wording you know may come from another translation. It can also come from a song, sermon, retelling or card. Therefore, treat the first match as a clue, not as proof that you have found the original sentence.

Compare the entire passage. Who speaks and about what? Then write down the book, chapter and verse and the translation used. This way you can later find what you actually read instead of just saving the individual statement.

When does a concordance help?

A concordance is a tool that connects words to their locations. Use one that suits your translation. In digital searching, the search function often fulfills a similar practical role, although the available search options differ.

Our approach: first search simply, check the text and only then consult additional reference work if you want to investigate a concept in more detail. If you just want to find a remembered sentence, you don't have to buy a new Bible. One can be used for deepening study bible be useful with appropriate tools.
