Understanding the Bible

Why are there four Gospels in the Bible?

THE SHORT ANSWER

The four Gospels tell about Jesus from different emphases and choices. They are not four identical versions. First read one gospel as a whole and then compare a passage with a parallel in another gospel.

Same center, different narratives

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John have Jesus as their center. They organize material and emphasize it in their own way. For example, the NBG describes how John sets his own accents and how the first three gospels share a lot of material.

That means you won't find every passage in all four books. A difference is a reason to read more carefully. It does not have to be solved immediately by combining the texts into one summary.

Compare with two simple columns

Choose a passage and use an overview of parallel texts to find a related section. Write what matches in one column and what differs in the other. Pay attention to the situation, the people, the order and the response at the end.

Then read the paragraphs before and after both sections. Ask what the place adds in each gospel. The goal is to first look carefully; a detailed explanation will only come afterwards. A comparison remains clearer if you do not immediately put four long chapters on the table at the same time.

Which Bible helps with this way of reading?

A regular complete Bible contains the four Gospels. For the first comparison, two bookmarks or a digital second text are sufficient. Introductions and cross-references can help when you're looking for more background, but check what resources an issue actually contains.

Our choice is first a pleasantly readable translation and only then additional study equipment. One study bible may be appropriate for targeted deepening; for getting to know each other is one easy reading edition often clearer. If you're just starting out, read through one Gospel before flipping back and forth through each sentence. This way you also maintain the own flow of the story.
