Separate Gospel or New Testament: what content do you get?

THE SHORT ANSWER

A separate Gospel contains one of the four Gospel books. A New Testament also contains the other Gospels, Acts, letters and Revelation. A complete Bible also contains the Old Testament of the tradition in question.

A thematic book can bear the title of one book of the Bible

The NBV21 Schrijfeditie Johannes contains John. That makes it a targeted reading and writing publication, but not a collection with all the Gospels. Always check the table of contents if you expect to follow a church schedule or references to other books of the Bible.

When one gospel can be enough

For a reading group that only discusses John, a separate edition can be nice: everyone can keep their own notes on the same text. To compare independently with Matthew or Luke you need another edition. The chosen book does not have to contain everything to be useful for one reading purpose.

A New Testament offers more text, not more explanation

It Nieuwe Testament met Joodse toelichtingen is an example in which scope and explanation come together. Other New Testaments may have little additional explanation. Therefore, break down the choice: which Bible books do you want, and how much guidance are you looking for?

Pay extra attention to beginner selections

The Bijbel voor beginners · NBV21 combines the entire New Testament with selected Old Testament texts. This makes it more than a single gospel, but less than the entire Bible. A complete edition remains necessary for all Old Testament passages. The question of content size differs from why there are four gospels.
