Ordering a Bible: this is how you check the correct edition and the ISBN

THE SHORT ANSWER

Before ordering, compare the ISBN of the Bible you want with the ISBN on the order page. Also check the translation, binding, size and additional material. The same title may come in different editions, and a similar cover does not guarantee the same book.

What does an ISBN tell you?

An ISBN identifies a specific book edition and product form. According to the International ISBN Agency, different formats, such as paperback and hardcover, are given separate ISBNs. The number helps to find a specific edition; it is not a quality mark.

Also pay attention to the description. An unaltered reprint can keep the same ISBN, and not every minor change to the cover requires a new issue. If the color or a specific design is important, have the seller confirm this.

Check these six points

  1. Translation: Does the full desired name appear, for example NBV21 or HSV?
  2. Content: is it a complete Bible, a selection or just the New Testament?
  3. Binding: Is it hardcover, paperback or another binding?
  4. Format: Do the dimensions and weight match the use you have in mind?
  5. Additions: Are study notes, writing space or extra books explicitly mentioned?
  6. ISBN: Does the number correspond to the edition you selected?

“Large” in a title does not necessarily mean that the letters are large. Check a large print claim separately. When in doubt, compare the store information with the publisher's description.

A concrete example from our selection

The NBV21 Standaardeditie has in our selection ISBN 9789089124005. The NBV21 Paperback has ISBN 9789089124265. Both use NBV21, but they are different versions. Simply searching for “NBV21 Bible” is therefore not enough to capture the desired version.

On our book pages the verified ISBN is listed at the link to bol. At bol, check again which edition has been selected, who the seller is and what the current price and delivery time are. That information may change. If desired, save the ISBN with your order.

Frequently asked questions

Is a different cover always a different ISBN?

No. A change in cover design does not automatically mean a new ISBN. Therefore, please also check any special wishes with the seller.

Why are there different prices for the same translation?

A translation can appear in multiple versions. In addition, sellers and offers may differ. Compare the edition first.
