THE SHORT ANSWER
Thumb grips are recesses on the side of the pages that allow you to access a Bible book more quickly. They assist with navigation, but do not replace chapter and verse numbers.
When is it useful to you?
If you often switch between Bible books during a service or conversation, thumb grips can provide peace of mind. They are also useful if you do not yet know the order of the books. A reading ribbon is often enough for quiet reading of one book of the Bible. So ask yourself what search problem you want to solve.
Check the format
Not every luxury Bible has thumb grips. Also, two almost identical-looking covers can be different designs. Explicitly search for the attribute on the product page and check the ISBN. In our selection, for example, the black leather HSV with zipper and the luxurious red Willibrord edition have thumb grips.
Try to hold it
A recess is only useful if you can use it comfortably. If possible, see how deep the cuts are and how clearly the markings read. A heavy book can be difficult to hold despite good navigation. Therefore, combine navigation, format and readability in your consideration, instead of opting for one extra function.
Issues to view
Choose based on your own reading purpose and, if in doubt, first look at the interior. These editions match the options above:
Frequently asked questions
Are thumb grips the same as reading ribbons?
No. Thumb grips help you go to a Bible book; a reading ribbon saves a selected page.
Can you add them yourself later?
Prefer to use separate suitable tabs if you want extra navigation. Do not cut the pages yourself.
