THE SHORT ANSWER
Choose a writing Bible for the space you really need: short notes require something different than extensive reflections or drawings. First check the translation and then view a sample page. The designation writing Bible does not guarantee that every writing material is suitable.
Writing to remember or to research
A writing Bible combines Bible text with space for your own notes. For example, the NBG offers a NBV21 Schrijfbijbel On. You add your questions and thoughts to such a publication; the writing space is not itself a collection of explanatory notes.
Think in advance about what you want to write down. A question next to a verse often fits in a margin. A summary of an entire chapter requires more space. Those who mainly want to draw have different wishes than someone who underlines words.
Do a test on plain paper
Take a sheet the size of the intended Bible page. Trace the available margin and write your normal note in it. This way you can quickly notice whether there is enough space, without immediately buying a book. Also check where the writing space is: next to the text or on a separate page.
Then check the paper and the publisher's directions. Only try writing materials carefully in an inconspicuous place if the book is yours. A nice result on thick drawing paper says nothing about showing through on thin Bible paper.
When is a separate notebook more sensible?
A separate notebook is useful if you keep extensive questions, compare different translations or prefer not to write anything in your Bible. Then write down the book, chapter and verse each time. Your notes will remain useful when you use another edition later.
Our selection aid: take a writing Bible if the direct connection between text and short note helps you. Choose a plain text Bible with scripture if space, rearranging or sharing is more important to you. Also compare the HSV Journal Bijbel when you use that translation, and read how to use a Bible reference notes. If you are mainly looking for explanation from experts, then a study bible another solution.
