THE SHORT ANSWER
First choose between the freer text of The Book and the HSV. The New Life combines The Book with practical explanations; the HSV Study Bible combines the HSV with commentary and background.
Two layers to review
A study Bible contains Bible text and explanation. Read both separately. Do you like the text, and does the explanation help you to better understand a passage? The explanation is an interpretation and not an additional Bible verse. Especially when dealing with a personal question of faith, it is useful to see which conclusion comes directly from the passage and which from the commentary.
What is your most important question?
If you want an accessible first lecture with practical applications, check out The New Life. If you want to use the HSV as a fixed text and consult the background, view the HSV Study Bible. Both can help with studies. Neither replaces careful reading of the passage and its connection with what comes before and after it.
Make the comparison concrete
Choose the same text section and read the notes in both books. Assess tone, amount of explanation and page layout. These large items mainly fit on a table or desk. If you are looking for one book for daily travel and study at home, consider whether a regular handy Bible plus separate explanations would work better.
