THE SHORT ANSWER
Find a map that fits the period and area of your Bible passage. First read the title and legend, then find the places mentioned and look at their relative location. A map helps with orientation, but does not automatically explain why something happened.
Don't start right away with a place name
A Bible can contain different types of maps: regions, cities or described journeys. Which cards are available depends on the edition. For example, Jongbloed mentions maps as a tool in the HSV Study Bible. Check the interior if this is important for your choice.
Read the title first. This indicates which area or period is intended. A place can have a different role in different times; a map of a later kingdom therefore does not automatically fit with an earlier story.
Work from the text to the card and back
Write down two or three place names from the passage you are reading. Look them up and see if mountains, water or area boundaries are indicated. Use the legend to understand lines and symbols. Without that explanation you can confuse a route with a border.
Then go back to the text. What makes the location clearer? Maybe you better understand why a journey consists of several steps. Do not enter people's motives yourself just because the map makes a certain route possible.
How do you choose a publication with usable maps?
Preview it at the size you actually read. Are place names easy to distinguish? Does a register refer to the maps? Are they close to the relevant explanation or do you have to search in the back? A large number of small maps is not automatically more useful than a few clear overviews.
Our choice: Buy an expanded edition only if you want to use the extra background. A separate reliable map next to your existing Bible may be sufficient.
