How do you combine an audio Bible with reading yourself?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Listen to a short Bible passage and then read the same passage in the same translation. Pause where you have a question. Een luisterbijbel is vooral handig als luisteren prettig is of lezen veel inspanning vraagt; you don't have to choose between the two.

Check exactly what you hear

An audio Bible contains Bible text read aloud. A podcast can also contain an explanation, conversation or reflection. Both can be valuable, but they do not perform the same function. At the NBG you can listen to the NBV21, among other things.

Look at the translation name on the recording. When you read along in another translation, the words do not always match. That can be interesting to compare, but it is also distracting if you want to follow word for word.

A short listening routine

Choose one scene or paragraph. Listen the first time without taking notes at the same time. Then ask yourself who was speaking and what changed. Play the piece again and pause at the part you want to find again.

Now read the paragraph before and after in your book. This prevents a single sentence from receiving all the attention while the connection is lost. Make a note of the reference if you want to come back to it later. Our preference is a small fragment with attention rather than many chapters that you can hardly follow.

Choose the tool that suits the situation

For relaxation, just listening can be enough. For comparing words or following references, visible text is usually more practical. Let your reading purpose determine what you use, without making listening a lesser form of getting to know each other.

Check the operation, availability and any account conditions in the chosen app. Don't automatically assume offline access. If you would like a paper edition, view the NBV21 Standaardeditie or compare the translations. We are available for larger printed text advice on large print.
