Read together

How do you start a Bible reading group in which everyone can participate?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Start with a small, fixed passage and agree that asking questions is more important than quickly giving the right answer. Use a common main translation and allow room for another translation to be added. Keep the first conversation short and evaluate together what helps.

Choose a shared basis

Ask about reading experience and expectations beforehand. Does the reader want an introduction, to explore difficult passages or to build a shared reading habit? If these aims differ greatly, discuss them before choosing a demanding study programme.

An accessible translation can help you read along. For example, the BGT focuses on understandable language. This does not make background questions superfluous. Choose one text as a starting point and use differences with other translations to look carefully, not to reject each other's preferences.

A simple flow of conversation

Read the chosen passage out loud and give a moment of silence. Let everyone first name what stands out. Then collect questions without answering them right away. Choose one question together that can be investigated with the text and a reliable explanation.

Conclude with what has become clearer and what is still open. Someone can pass if they don't want to say anything. This form of conversation is our practical proposal; adapt the duration and preparation to the group. A conversation does not have to reach the same conclusion every time.

What book material is really necessary?

A readable Bible is sufficient for the start. If everyone immediately uses a different extensive study Bible, the conversation can turn to explanations before the text itself has been read. One focused background piece can be clearer.

Our choice: start modestly and after a few meetings determine what help is lacking. If you want to purchase a joint publication, compare language, format and explanation. View the BGT and the translation comparator. It helps to deepen our article on study notes. Make sure that participants without their own book can also read the agreed passage via an authorized reading source.

Frequently asked questions

Does every participant have to buy the same Bible?

No. The same main text helps when reading together, but a different edition or digital text may also be useful.

What if no one knows the answer?

Write down the question, consult a reliable source and get back to it. Uncertainty may remain visible.
