Kees de Kort was the illustrator behind the series What the Bible tells us and the Kijkbijbel. The Dutch-Flemish Bible Society describes how a call for Biblical illustrations in 1964 led to the series, the first part of which appeared in 1967. His images use clear areas of color and emphasize people and their emotions. The stories were later collected in the Kijkbijbel. De Kort died on August 19, 2022. His work remains an entry point for children to get to know Bible stories through images.
The Kijkbijbel combines 28 stories with its illustrations. First have a child tell you what is happening on a picture. The faces can help to talk about sadness, wonder or joy without immediately using difficult words.
The scroll for each issue is listed on the book page.
